                         {\'a}reas ocupadas por plantas aqu{\'a}ticas nas lagoas e nos 
                         canais de escoamento tempor{\'a}rio de {\'a}gua. A {\'a}rea de 
                         estudo faz parte da sub-regi{\~a}o da Nhecolandia e 
                         caracteriza-se por apresentar lagoas de {\'a}gua doce, de 
                         {\'a}gua salobra, salinas, corixos e vazantes, que s{\~a}o 
                         temporariamente ocupados por plantas aqu{\'a}ticas e algas. 
                         Utilizaram-se imagens digitais do Tem{\'a}tica Mapper (TM)do 
                         sat{\'e}lite Landsat, datada de 26/08/93 e HRV-SPOT, datada de 
                         12/06/87. Realizou-se um sobrevoo na {\'a}rea de estudo para 
                         obten{\c{c}}{\~a}o de fotos 35 mm de algumas baias, e 
                         realizaram-se trabalhos de campo para levantamento de 
                         informa{\c{c}}{\~o}es sobre distribui{\c{c}}{\~a}o espacial e 
                         composi{\c{c}}{\~a}o flor{\'{\i}}stica das plantas 
                         aqu{\'a}ticas nas baias. Algoritmos de classifica{\c{c}}{\~a}o 
                         determin{\'{\i}}sticos (fatiamento)e probabil{\'{\i}}sticos 
                         (m{\'a}xima verossimilhan{\c{c}}a)foram aplicados em baias 
                         selecionadas. {\'A}reas com predomin{\^a}ncia de Salvinia 
                         auriculata e Scirpus cubensis foram bem discriminadas. A 
                         presen{\c{c}}a de plantas aqu{\'a}ticas foi facilmente observada 
                         nas bandas 4 e 5 do Landsat. No entanto, a dificuldade encontrada 
                         em diferenciar {\'a}reas ocupadas por plantas aqu{\'a}ticas, 
                         pela utiliza{\c{c}}{\~a}o de dados com resolu{\c{c}}{\~a}o 
                         espacial de 20 e 30 metros, sugere que estudos com fotografias 
                         a{\'e}reas e radi{\^o}metros possam levar a resultados mais 
                         detalhados. ABSTRACT: The objective of this work was to evaluate 
                         areas covered by aquatic plants in ponds and temporary drainage 
                         channels through optical sensors. The area of study is part of the 
                         Nhecol{\^a}ndia subregion of the Brazilian Pantanal wetland and 
                         is characterized by ponds of fresh and salt-lakes waters, 
                         temporarily covered by aquatic macrophytes and algae. TM (Thematic 
                         Mapper)-Landsat digital image, from Aug. 26, 1993, and HRV-SPOT 
                         digital image, from June 12, 1987, were used. An overflight was 
                         made in the study area to obtain 35 mm photographs of some ponds, 
                         and field work was carried out to survey the spatial distribution 
                         and floristic composition of the aquatic plantas in the ponds. 
                         Algorithms of slicing and maximum likelihood classification were 
                         applied on selected ponds. Areas with predominance of Salvinia 
                         auriculata and Scirpus cubensis were well discriminated. Presence 
                         of aquatic plants was easily observed on Landsat bands 4 and 5. 
                         However the difficulty to distinguish areas occupied by different 
                         aquatic plants, through the use of data with spatial resolution of 
                         20 to 30 meters, suggests that studies based on aerial photographs 
                         and radiometers may produce more detailed results.",
